Paul encouraged Timothy to share with him in the sufferings for the sake of the gospel, and not to neglect his gift. He gave the reason, "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind." (2 Timothy 1:7) God has equipped us with everything we need to face difficulties and threats as a child of His.
